when i saw that guy wearing a cleric robe and holding a burning torch in his hand on the markt in maastricht first time some years ago i was wondering who he was: some unsung hero of the inquisition? it turned out later that he invented the street lighting by gas - well, probably one of the many inventing it. yet it is one of the few performative monument i could think of - it does a bit more than just standing there attracting doves.
